Being in the teens can be very challenging to many people. Though this is the beginning of adult life, there will be other problems to face like acne. Acne first appears in the teen years for millions of people. It is a very common disorder too. There are several myths about the causes of acne. Before a teenager comes around to taking some treatment, it is important to learn about the disorder.

By educating themselves about the disorder, they will be making things easier for themselves. They will also understand that they are not the cause of acne. When people enter their teens, they are bound to see a hormonal change in the body. Most of the time it is the hormone called androgens that causes severe acne. There are several ways to control this disorder.

When acne treatment begins, you cannot expect overnight results. It will take at least two months, before you can see any difference in the skin. This is because the hormone just continuously aggravates the oil glands to produce oil. Benzoyl peroxide is the first and most common medication that teens use to clear acne. This is something that can be obtained over the counter, and absolutely needs no prescription.

It is available in several forms too, like a cream, gel, soap or pads. This medicine is supposed to be taken only once a day initially. This also has to be spread over the area infected with acne, and it must be just applied on each blemish. After a while, as per the instructions of the doctor, you may start applying it twice a day.

Your skin must be clear when you apply this medicine, so it is a good idea to wash the skin with soap before application. The best time to apply this would be before you go to bed. Another thing to be noted, is that initially you must start with a lower strength of the medicine. The second effective way to treat acne is with antibiotics.

This also comes in the form of oral medicines or in other forms such as gel and cream. This medicine must also be applied on the entire area that has acne. Though many doctors may prescribe these creams initially, they will ask you to take oral medicines only if these do not work. All doctors will alternate medicines, if one or the other does not seem to have effect.

Tretinoin is another good medicine to treat acne in teens. Like the other two medicines mentioned, this is also used on the skin once a day. Most often, acne medication is used only once a day. This may start working after several weeks. This medicine is not to be used in very sensitive areas near the eyes, and mouth. While using this medicine, the sun must be avoided greatly.

This medicine also comes in the form of pills, but is prescribed for only severe acne. Isotretinoin is a medicine used to treat less severe acne in teens.
