Acne scars are the defects in the skin left over by the acne when they die off. These scars are visible either as skin texture defects or the skin pigment color defect. And to treat these scars the formulations containing mostly Alpha hydroxy acid family compounds are used.

One of them is the Glycolic Acid. Almost all the skin care products have glycolic acid as main compound to give the skin a proper refurbishing. Being one of the family members of the alpha-hydroxy acid like Citric acid it works better as cleaning agents for the skin.

When it comes to treating acne scars then Glycolic acid containing products do better jobs. And for the frequent skin cleansing purpose the glycolic acid is also used in combination to the salicylic acid which has excellent exfoliating properties.

The main reasons to use Glycolic acid for acne and acne scar treatment are its acidic nature which kills the bacteria and imparts the exfoliating characteristics which result in its enhanced moisturizing properties beneficial for skin.

The working methodology of Glycolic skin is carried out as follows. When a molecule of the Glycolic acid comes in contact with the skin, it penetrates and attacks on the bonding substance that is responsible for dead cells’ juncture beneath the first layer of skin. This juncture of dead cell is responsible for acne.

The glue properties of substance are killed and the dead cells are prevented to form a clump to exhibit bacterial activities. This process makes the follicle to remain clean and allow the oil glands to freely supply oil on to the surface of skin through the duct carrying with them the dead cell. The dead cells are washed off by natural exfoliation process and the new skin layer comes up.

In the supplementary process it stimulates the Glyco-Amino-Glycans leading to development of the Hyaluronic acid a compound that maintains the moisture of the skin by binding the water molecule in a form of gel like layer. In other process it also helps the development of more collagen and elastin formation, so that the skin remains elastic like a rubber.

The Glycolic acid also makes the skin pore edges to contract and the skin get a tighter look and feel. This is helpful when the dirt is cleaned the pore edges contract there are very less chances of dirt getting clogged which eliminates the chances of development of acne and scars.

With all these properties, the various products are available in market containing the glycolic acid and other compounds to retain the skin health. They are available in various forms like gels, lotions, peel-of face masks and scrub creams. These products if applied topically for 6 weeks to six months then they will naturally build the skin more bouncy, tightened and full of healthy texture.

However, Glycolic acid makes the skin sun burn sensitive, so often the sun protection creams are advised while going into the direct sunlight. Well before buying out Glycolic acid products make sure the concentration level never go beyond 10%.
