Smoothbeam is a laser procedure in which a beam of light at a specific wavelength is applied to the skin and is absorbed by the collagen in the skin and the sebaceous glands.

Smoothbeam is an advanced multi-effect non-ablative* laser treatment for acne scarring, active acne and collagen building. These quick and comfortable laser treatments are highly effective in reducing active acne and acne scars and reversing some of the collagen loss of aging. Smoothbeam stimulates the body’s natural collagen-building process.

It is an effective acne treatment, especially for acne scarring on the face and back. The laser works by targeting and heating the collagen and sebaceous glands in the skin. The skin is protected and cooled, however, with a special cooling device.

This laser procedure may be used in teens and adults with all skin types. Patients might opt to include this laser treatment in addition to their acne treatment.

Smoothbeam Laser is a safe and effective method of treating acne, and acne scarring and wrinkles.

The procedure is typically performed by a trained nurse with supervision by a physician, or by a physician.

Reduction of Active Acne and Acne Scarring

NATURE OF THE PROCEDURE

The Smoothbeam laser emits a beam of light that will stimulate your collagen to grow. The actual treatment is preceded and followed by a gentle cooling spray which will reduce any discomfort. Once this collagen grows, it will help fill in wrinkles at the treated sites, and may help fill in acne scars as well for the very same reason.

This treatment is non-ablative, and there is virtually no risk or downtime. You may immediately return to work, school, or other social activities. The Smoothbeam differs from other lasers for this purpose because it currently has the longest wavelength currently available for the deepest penetration into the skin. The N-Lite laser only has a wavelength of 585 nanometers, and the CoolTouch II only has 1320 nanometers. Only the Smoothbeam laser has the longest wavelength of 1450 nanometers which will give the deepest penetration into the collagen.

No test dose is necessary, the treatment is virtually in apparent, and the collagen regrowth will occur slowly and in a gentle yet effective fashion.

Possible side effects include skin lightening, skin darkening and redness. Occasionally, this laser is not effective, and in rare cases it can cause scarring.

How long does a Smoothbeam Laser treatment take?

One of the most exciting aspects of Smoothbeam technology is that it allows laser treatment in short “lunchtime” procedures. Treatments generally take 10 to 30 minutes. After your treatment, you can go right back to work or out to dinner without anyone knowing you’ve had treatment. Or, if you like, you can choose more aggressive treatment. The number of treatments and interval of treatments vary depending on the severity of the condition and the extent of the improvement desired.

In general, patients have two to six treatments about every four to six weeks.

Is there any pain involved in laser treatment with Smoothbeam?

Because the lasers dynamic cooling device is so effective, many patients report the procedure as "mild", with little more than a slight snapping or tingling sensation. Of course, pain is subjective, and topical anesthetics can be used, if the patient wishes.

Cool compresses may be applied to the treated area to reduce redness and any swelling. Avoid scrubbing with abrasive cleansers and protect your skin with a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher.

How long before I see results?

Several treatments may be required, depending on anatomical location and the extent of desired results. Results become visible after about two to six treatments.

What precautions should be taken before and after treatment?

Avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before treatment, and again after treatment until your physician allows it. Care should be taken in the first few days following treatments to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated area with abrasive skin cleansers.

Are there any side effects to treatment with Smoothbeam?

In general, most procedures have a low risk of side effects. More aggressive treatments might induce some temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin. Some patients might experience pigment changes in skin color. If this occurs, the skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time.

When the laser is applied to the skin, patients feel some stinging, so sometimes the nurse or physician will apply an anesthetic cream to the area of treatment prior to beginning.

The skin being treated must not be tanned. If you have a history of cold sores in the treatment area, an anti-viral medication will be prescribed by the physician to be started the day before the laser procedure and taken for a few days afterwards.
